5 year old sheltie snarls at puppy

We have a 5 year old sheltie and 14 year old beagle mix. Our beagle is the only dog our sheltie "likes", since she's been with her since we got her at 8 weeks. We've tried bringing the sheltie around other dogs often, but she just hides behind us and avoids any interaction. Our daughter recently brought her 9 week old puppy home for the weekend. We introduced the puppy to the sheltie very slowly, using a mesh pack n play and lots of praise and attention on our sheltie. But she acted aggressively toward the puppy whenever the puppy got too close. She snarled and growled. The sheltie isnot spayed. Is there any way to better socialize a shetie this age? Would spaying help? The puppy is going to have to come back for short and longer visits. What should we do? Thanks!

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
