Aggressive 6 yr old newfoundland

My gorgeous 6 and half year old newfoundland male is now attacking my cats and has even gone for our cocker spaniel..although I have had both from puppies and at the same age..the cocker is usually the boss..he hasn't done any serious damage YET..
He has gone for at least 4 dogs and 4 cats.. he doesn't show any obvious signs of being in pain..still eating..
He will be going vets on Tuesday but I would be grateful for any advice...

Nothing showed at the vets and vet says he might just be getting grumpy in his old age. Well this didn't help me at all. He has been behaving since but I am often on tenterhooks waiting for him to go for another animal. He has such a loving gentle side and I love him and intend to keep him but how do I do stop another attack. I say attack but these have been warnings. Had he 100% meant to he would have been able to kill all as he is nearly 15 stone.

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
