Aggressive approx 2 yr old Maltese rescue

by Marilyn B.
(Villa Park, CA)

We rescued Bobby in July. The rescue had him since January, which probably tells us that he was rescued and returned maybe several times because of his aggressiveness and barking. We are probably his last resort. I do not want to give him up as he is very loving once he settles down.

He barks and wants to chase cars while we walk him. If a person walks by he barks and acts very aggressive. If I try to touch him he will nip me when he is "red". He is fine with my husband and me but if my husband leaves the room Bobby with act aggrssive and bark when he returns. He will keep this up until he sits down and puts his hand out to pet him. He is this way with anyone who comes into our home. He barks and I'm afraid he will nip someone before they sit down and put their hand out to pet him. He is even that way with children.

We have tried spraying water and have used the citronella spray. This agrivates more. We have not tried the shock collar. Is that our last resort?

Is there any help for him, I do not want to give him up???

We do not know his history.

Nothing In Life Is Free
by: Adam G. Katz

Employ the "Nothing In Life Is Free" approach, so that your dog starts to view you as the "pack leader." If your dog doesn't see you as the leader, then your corrections will be meaningless. So, if you're doing subtle things (inadvertently) to undermine your leadership role around the house-- it will be counter-productive.
